Transfer by land rover to the starting point.
The drive will take us to the heart of the barbagia region, through the little village of orgosolo, and further up to the uplands just above the montes forest. We will then pass by the funtana bona spring to finally reach the slopes of monte S. Giovanni. This is where our walking tour will start. We will make our way up to the tops, ending-up in the middle of a rough and wild area from which we will be able to enjoy a breathtaking view on a wide portion of the supramonte mountains.
Our trek will continue through a fir wood until reaching the calcareous peak of monte fumai. Up there, we’ll take our time to stroll around the bare landscape and visit the ruins of a few ancient sheepfolds, just to start our descent through a centuries-old holm oak wood right afterwards.
At this point, we’ll get back on the car and drive to join a group of local shepherds for lunch. Sheltered under ancient holm oaks (quercus ilex), using our knees as a table, we will have a typical shepherds’ lunch: some cheese and sliced salami, pane carasau (the traditional sardinian flat bread), boiled sheep with vegetables, roasted pork, water and wine. At the end of the meal, to aid digestion, you’ll also get the chance to have a glass of abbardente, a typical sardinian spirit. After lunch, our trip will conclude with a visit to orgosolo, famous for its murales. We will then head back to orosei, maybe a bit tired but thrilled with our day!
